Hands-On Science Fun All Summer Long!

At Sarah's Science and This Land is your Land Summer Day Camp, your child will discover just how fun learning can be! In addition to traditional camp activities like swimming, games, nature hikes, and arts and crafts, campers will make and take home a fun science project each day! A take-home science note accompanies each science lesson and is a great way to continue the learning at home. Our goal is for every child to have a summer filled with outrageous fun in a beautiful, natural setting.

With beautiful, outdoor locations in Oakland and Berkeley and weekly sessions from June 11 - August 24, This Land is Your Land Summer Day Camp provides award-winning, hands-on, outdoor science fun all summer long!

Weekly Camp Sessions

June 11 – 15: Go Green
  • Make your own cold composting wormery to decompose your lunch (worms included)
  • Use the sun's energy to vibrate a solar cell jitterbug
  • Create cool optical illusions with a water-powered hydroelectric spinner

June 18 – 22: Rockets Away!
  • Blast-off a homemade air-powered bottle rocket
  • Slingshot a whirly bird rocket into the sky and watch it twirl to the ground
  • Concoct a chemical reaction to launch an Alka-Seltzer rocket

June 25 – 29: Games Galore
  • Bowl strikes with a portable pendulum bowling game
  • Test your skills on the court with a hand-held basketball catapult
  • Invent your own single-player magnetic maze game

July 2 – 6: Nature Detectives
(No Camp Wednesday July 4; Reduced Rate)
  • Dissect owl pellets and reassemble the tiny skeletons within
  • Make an entomologist's aspirator (bug vacuum) to examine insects
  • Grow native California milkweed and learn about the life cycle of monarch butterflies
  • Plus we'll also have a special visit from our friends (human and reptile) at the East Bay Vivarium!

July 9 – 13: Tops and Other Spinning Things
  • Make a motorized solar-powered spinner and hang it from your ceiling
  • Trick your mind with an optical illusion spinning top
  • Design your own animation with a personal thaumatrope

July 16 – 20: All Wired Up!
  • Wire up an electric fiber optic robot and watch it light up
  • Make a motorized propeller and control the speed with resistors
  • Spook your friends with a static electricity-powered floating ghost

July 23 – 27: Crazy Contraptions
  • Greet your friends with a crank-powered mechanical hand waver
  • Bring the circus home with a mini gravity-powered carousel
  • Construct an electric vibrating robot and watch it buzz around your house

July 30 – August 3: Abracadabra! The Science of Magic
  • Astound your friends with magic tricks (shhh. it's really science!)
  • Make water "magically" disappear
  • Create a magic message tube to decode secret messages
  • Plus we'll be treated to a special visit from our friend, Gerald Joseph the Magician.

August 6 – 10: Catapults & Castles - Medieval Science
  • Compete in a duel with lever-action jousting knights
  • Create a medieval castle and knock down the walls with a catapult
  • Build your own PVC mini trebuchet catapult
  • On Freaky Friday, dress up as your favorite knight or princess

August 13 – 17: Terrific Tools
  • Wire up a motorized electric sander for your construction project
  • Gather loose nuts and bolts with a homemade magnetic pickup tool
  • Use a water-powered mini hydraulic jack to do heavy lifting

August 20 – 24: Sarah's Favorites
  • Launch marshmallows across the room with a specialized catapult
  • Head to the race track with a rubber band-powered hot rod
  • Surprise your friends across the room with a plastic bottle air cannon

Special Programs:

Counselor in Training (CIT) Program (For Campers Ages 11–15)
Our CIT Program is for older campers who are interested in taking on more responsibility and developing leadership skills. CITs are teamed up with an experienced counselor to assist a group of younger campers; they also participate in the usual camp projects and activities. An optional First Aid Certification is provided prior to the start of the summer and additional leadership training is provided weekly throughout the summer. The CIT Program is available for single or multiple weeks and has the same fees and discounts as the regular camp program.

Advanced Projects (For Campers Ages 9–12)
For our 9–12 year olds we offer an additional challenging project during the week.

Roberts Park, Oakland

Our Oakland site is located in beautiful Roberts Regional Park off Skyline Boulevard in the Oakland Hills. This site is known for its lush second-growth redwood forest. It also has a pool, grassy playing fields, and play structures. There is ample free parking for drop-off and pick-up.

Tilden Park, Berkeley

Our Berkeley site is located in Tilden Park at the Buckeye and Orchard Picnic Areas, lovely wooded sites below the Carousel. We are surrounded by great paths and streams, and we hike to Lake Anza to swim once a week. Free parking is available for drop-off and pick-up.

Sarah Shaffer, Founder & CEO
Sarah, "Best Science Teacher for Kids" (East Bay Express), founded This Land Is Your Land Summer Day Camp 23 years ago. She continues to develop and shape the summer camp programs and oversees each site. Sarah is a Teacher, Science Consultant, and Naturalist. She has been offering science programs for children and teachers for over 30 years.

Riva Zippin, Camp Director
Riva is a graduate of UC Berkeley and has a teaching credential from Holy Names University. This will be her tenth summer directing the Oakland site. She was an Assistant Director with us for four years and a day camp counselor for over nine years. During the school year, Riva teaches a kindergarten and first grade class at Ring Mountain Day School in Mill Valley.

Faith Elsen, Camp Director
Faith is a graduate of the University of Central Florida with a degree in Secondary Science Education. She has taught "Toyology" after school enrichment classes with us for two years and enjoys teaching science in a fun and creative way. Last summer, she directed aftercare for our Oakland camp location and can't wait to spend another summer outdoors learning.

Kaitlyn Knapp, Camp Director
Kaitlyn is a graduate of CSU East Bay with a degree in U.S. History and is currently working on her Master's in Education at San Francisco State University. She is returning for her third summer with us, directing at both camp locations. Kaitlyn looks forward to sharing her love and excitement for the outdoors and learning with campers and staff.

Camp Cost:

Cost:
$420/week (Nobel Prize Rate) if registration received by 10/10/17 - No other discounts apply.
$445/week (Holiday Special) if registration received by 12/03/17 - No other discounts apply.
$470/week (Early Bird Rate) if registration received by 2/14/18 - No other discount apply.
$495/week (Early Registration) if registration received by 4/1/18.
$515/week (Standard Registration)if registration received after 4/1/18.
$530/week (Walk-in Registration) if space available - No discounts apply.

Extended Care:
The regular camp hours are 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Morning extended care is from 8:00 a.m.–9:00 a.m. for an additional $30/week.
Afternoon extended care is from 3:00 p.m.–5:30 p.m. for an additional $90/week.
Extended Care can be purchased in advance or on the day-of for the prices listed above.
A late fee of $2/minute is assessed for late pick-up after 5:30 p.m.

Discounts:
(Discounts cannot be combined)

Multiple week discount: Sign up for three or more weeks and deduct $20 for each week.
Sibling discount:
$20 less per week for second child (cannot be used with multiple week discount).
Please note the above discounts cannot be applied to the Walk-In, Nobel Prize, Holiday Special, or Early Bird rates.

Terms and Conditions:
Summer camp fees must be paid in full at time of registration. In the event of cancellation, $100/child/week will be retained as a non-refundable deposit. No refunds will be issued after May 1, 2018. Camp sessions are not transferable to other customers. Discounts cannot be combined. The walk-in rate of $530/week will be assessed for same-day registrations and registrations placed the Friday before the camp session begins. Campers who do not sign up for morning extended care but arrive prior to 8:45 AM will be billed at the rate of $7/day or $30 for the whole week. Campers who do not sign up for afternoon extended care but are picked up after 3:15 PM will be billed at the rate of $25/day or $90 for the full week. Please pick up promptly at the end of the day. Late pickup after 5:30 PM will be billed at the rate of $2/minute. Sibling and multi-week discounts are applicable for Early & Standard rates only.

Please note the following:
No camp in Oakland or Berkeley on Wednesday, July 4, 2018.
